These CTE pathway courses are available to AHES students. Each course runs for 10 or 20 week periods.
Health and Environmental Science Careers (10 wks)

This course gives students an overview of health and environmental careers. The focus is on career exploration, guest speakers allow students weekly opportunities to speak with Health or Environmental Professional. This course develops student leadership with culminating projects showcased in our Spring Health and Fitness Fair. Students are trained in First Aid, CPR, and become Peer Health Educators through our mentors at UCLA.

Science and Research Exploration (10 wks)

This course provides students with the tools to explore the natural world. Students will be introduced to science as a process while gaining intimate knowledge and the skills necessary to conduct a scientific investigation. A student successfully completing this course will understand how to ask meaningful questions; observe, collect and analyze data (using simple statistics); analyze situations and solve problems using more than one discipline of science. Furthermore students will investigate a science-based environmental and societal issue by researching literature, analyzing data, and communicating their findings.

Foods & Nutrition (10wks)

This course is an introduction to food and nutrients, the body’s digestive process, and the health impact of nutrient deficiencies and excesses. Students will discuss the relationships between food, nutrition, health, culture, and the environment including world food supply, food access and security, agriculture, production, and food safety. Students will have the opportunity to grow, cultivate, and prepare their own food, researching how effectively they have used the resources allocated to produce their harvest.

Environmental Technology (20 wks)

This curriculum focuses on water: identifying our water sources, the impact that landscape and urban agriculture has on our water supply, and how our water is treated and distributed. Students will analyse the school’s water usage, why conservation of our watersheds is important and how we can reduce water pollution locally and globally for a more sustainable future. Students will also learn about alternative energy sources and will work on developing different projects that incorporate solar, wind, or hydroelectric power sources.

Anatomy and Physiology (20wks)Offered in 2011-2012

This course covers principles of human anatomy and physiology, including basic chemistry, cell and tissue studies, and an overview of all the body systems. Upon completion, students should be able to identify structures and functions of the human body and describe how lifestyle and environment affect a person’s health and their risk for disease.
